3/1/2014 : The first railroad in Massachusetts was chartered in 1826 and since that time the commonwealth has seen dozens of operators expand and contract their operations. Interestingly enough, by 1836 railroad corporations had to submit reports of their activities to the Secretary of the Commonwealth and in 1871 a Railroad Commission was established to oversee these companies. This wonderful digital collection from the Massachusetts State Library brings together dozens of maps, manuscripts, and annual reports related to the operations of these companies.

Principles to Guide Passenger Rail Operations on Freight-Owned Corridors Expanding passenger rail operations over the nation’s freight rail network involves significant opportunities and challenges.

The odds that these challenges can be overcome will be higher if certain principles are followed:

Passenger Railroading in the United States Existing commuter Proposed commuter Designated high-speed corridors (most are existing Amtrak routes) Amtrak intercity Safety comes first.

Railroads are an extremely safe way to move people and freight, and everyone involved in railroading wants to keep it that way. That’s why safety has to come first when it comes to passenger trains sharing track or rights-of-way with freight trains.

Among other things, this means that in some cases — depending on train speeds and frequency, track standards, and other factors — separate tracks for passenger and freight trains will be needed.
